The sun is shining, and we all know what that means – it’s time to plan for summer renovation projects!

The sun is shining, and we all know what that means – it’s time to plan for summer renovation projects! Whether you are adding a new garden or switching to hardwood flooring, there are many things to consider before you begin your next big project...

  1. Know your End Goal

Before starting renovations, understand what the end goal is going to look like. Are you renovating to increase the resale value of home or are you renovating to have a change of scenery and live there for many years to come? Having a plan in place can go a long way when determining what kind of renovations you need to conduct. Also, have a vision. Gathering images from a website like Pinterest can help generate ideas and provide guidance throughout your reno project.

  1. Realize your Limits

Some of us may want to tackle large scale projects and have specific visions in mind. However, we must each understand our bandwidth and skillset. Although DIY renovations are a great way to save money, if you don’t know what you are doing, you may risk spending even more when it’s all said and done. For tasks that require more expertise, don’t be afraid to get some help and find a contractor!

  1. Budget. Budget.

Create a budget and ensure you stick with it! When renovating, it can be very easy to go over budget so make sure you have some buffer room when it comes to funds as unexpected costs can add up fast. Before starting renos, spend a good amount of time budgeting the project.

  1. Work Backwards

Are you hosting an end-of-summer BBQ gathering with some friends you haven’t seen in a while? Are you wanting to renovate your deck so it looks perfect for the big visit? Planning backwards is KEY. Pick a date you’d want your project to be completed by and work backwards. Have deadlines and phases in which you need to get work done by. And remember, give yourself some buffer time in case there are weather issues or other delays.

  1. Have a Checklist

Make a checklist and include everything from permits to drill bits – the more details, the easier the reno process will be. Feel free to make an Excel file and organize the list as needed such as tools needed, permits, labor needed etc. Once complete, keep all your tangible goods in ONE area so you’re not wasting time looking for them around the house during renos.
